The ORIC supports ecosystem research at the University for Sustainability and works with researchers to ensure that research is conducted in accordance with the appropriate regulations.  We strive to foster compliance without impeding the process of research.
ORIC assists researchers in the following areas:
  • Human Subjects Research (IRB) - IRB assures appropriate and necessary steps are taken to protect the rights and welfare of humans participating in research. The IRB functions according to the guidelines of the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP) and other jurisdictional regulatory agencies.
  • Conflict of Interest (COI) - The purpose of Conflict of Interest regulations and policy is to promote objectivity in research and ensure unbiased design, conduct and reporting of research. Jurisdictional regulations and University policy require that individuals involved in sponsored research disclose potential or actual conflicts of interest.  ORIC receives the disclosures and if necessary assists with mitigation of the conflict.
  • Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) - RCR incorporates a set of ethical standards in topic areas that when applied results in responsible and ethical research of the highest standard. ORIC sponsors a number of RCR education programs.
  • Global Export Compliance - Jurisdictional export compliance is compliance as may be required by law in the  countries within which the University operates, related to the control of exports. These may include the physical shipment of tangible items as well as the transfer of information.
  • Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) - Jurisdictional regulations and standards may govern the use and care of animals in research.  Standards regarding the housing, husbandry and research procedures must be adhered to by all members of the research team.  ORIC provides oversight for these activities via the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Research Misconduct - From time to time individuals in the research ecosystem are concerned that research is being conducted in a manner that is outside the generally accepted norms of behavior for research. This could include falsification or fabrication of data, plagiarism or other types of unethical behavior.  ORIC is responsible for administrating allegations of research misconduct.
  • A Research Integrity Forum is being created. Delegates shall be drawn from and work with member universities to share best practice and develop research guidelines conducive to building a research ecosystem of integrity and quality. The Forum shall work with member universities and institutes to share best practice and to provide guidance on what constitutes good science to build a research ecosystem of integrity and quality.

Non-Discrimination Policy*
“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." These simple but powerful words are the first line of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1949. The declaration’s power has always depended on our collective will to uphold its noble aspirations.
The University for Sustainability does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability in any of its policies, procedures, or practices, in compliance with Title VI of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This non-discrimination policy covers admission and access to, and treatment and employment in, the University's programs and activities. The University recognizes its obligation to provide overall program accessibility for disabled persons.
Nothing in this policy shall abridge academic freedom or the University's mission. Prohibitions against discrimination and discriminatory harassment do not extend to actions, statements or written materials that are relevant and appropriately related to course subject matter or academic debate.
This policy governs the conduct of all University for Sustainability students, faculty, staff and visitors that occurs on the University’s facilities or in connection with University-sponsored programs.  This policy also governs conduct by University students, faculty, staff and visitors that creates, contributes to, or continues a hostile work, educational, or living environment for a member or members of the University community.
