A core objective of the University for Sustainability (US) is to support its members (universities, research institutes, and other knowledge centers) around the world to play a leading role in sustainable development in four ways: (1) as educators; (2) research centers; (2) as key partners in problem solving alongside government, business, and civil society; and (4) as social entrepreneurs in solution initiatives. The US is motivated by the idea that hundreds universities and research centers around the world should be playing these roles at the local, national, regional, and global levels.
It is chaired by Rector Pro Tempore Prof. K. M. Stokes and comprises a lead faculty/research representative from each US member institution.
The US Academic Committee, launched in 2015, comprises of 15-20 senior members of university members of the US. The Academic Committee will advise the Leadership Council regarding academic initiatives undertaken by the US and outreach to academic communities. It will also support the design and dissemination of educational materials for sustainable development, and propose options for creating an online university for sustainable development.
